LUSH: Secret Wine

September 27, 2010 at 9:54 am (Current Events, French Wine, What we are thinking, What we're drinking) (, , , , , , , , )

I love contests. I am fairly competitive, and always love a good game and friendly challenges.  And, if wine is involved, all the better.  Thus, when Ms. Cara of Decant Chicago blog mentioned the Secret Wine contest, I just couldn’t resist.  Exhilarating!

http://en.secret-wine.com/Reglement

The simple rules involved registering as one of the first 85 bloggers, eagerly awaiting 3 bottles of blind wine, and then voting.  At stake, a trip to France! Awesome. I am SO in. And game.

The wine arrived, re-bottled, re-corked, and labeled with ‘Secret Wine’ and a number.  Instructions were to guess the appellation. Just the appellation. Not the grapes, or the year, or the producer.  Seems simple, right?  Not so much.

After completing some very brief research into the host company, Clare de Lune, a French wine PR company, I surmised that the wines are most likely from the regions the company represents in France.  However, even with all that narrowing down and focus, it is still extremely difficult to pick just one. And, yes, I am also well aware that making assumptions when blind tasting is involved is risky business.

The contest is still running, but we have been encouraged to share, in detail, our tasting experience and reasoning process.  Much tasting.  Very fun.  And surprising.

One vote only. Apparently, all guesses thus far are not quite correct. So, the waiting continues while the remaining bloggers catch up and vote. Until then…the wines are still secret.

Reservations still OPEN for the exceedingly exciting, tasty, damn arrogant bastards of brewing. STONE Brewing Company is coming to LUSH for a big kick off, launch event, Friday, April 2nd, 6-9pm. All the LUSH locations will be breaking out the bad boys. Bottles at Roscoe. Kegs at Halsted and West Town. Brewers and Stone folk all around. Brews…new and library collection pieces, maybe even a cellared 3L; delicious snacks; really cool stuff to buy. Roar. The Stones are coming. (Not rolling, mind you). $15 per person. RSVP strongly suggested. Email kelly@lushwineandspirits.com to get on the RSVP list. *Please indicate at which location you prefer to consume liquid arrogance*

Sunday, April 4th, 2-5pm:  Sundays with LUSH – Craft Brews. To properly initiate the impending Craft Brewers Conference that will take the city by storm this next week, LUSH is popping the tops on a wild array of craft beers. Brew-centric, indeed. And sudsy. Get set. Ready. Go…BEER! Beer beer beer. Brew, brew, brew, beer. Hops, malt, and quirky ingredients abound!

We are handpicking our spring favorites, as well as new releases from the brewers that are flitting into town this week. The warming trend leaves the Lushes parched with thirst, crawling from our dark little hole, and in need of seriously spritely, zippy brews. Spring saisons, of course, but hefe and maibock or just around the corner, and lightly spiced whites are still quite nice. Maybe a sour and a Basque cider to kick it up a notch. And, of course, a few solid standards of the Chicago local variety.

[LUSH West Town
1412 W. Chicago Ave]
Friday, April 16th, 6-8pm: North Shore Distillery ‘Spring’ Cocktails interactive seminar and tasting. Canadian Wine, eh.

Relevations about Canadian wine regions…

On March 24th, LUSH West Town played host to a showcase tasting of Canadian wineries, put on by the Canadian consulate. Primarily focused on Ontario and British Columbia, wines ranged from zippy, spritely Riesling to peppery Cab Franc, and right back around to intensely little bottles of icewine. A nice little related article, and video!, may be found here; http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/todays-chicago-woman/2010/03/chicago-canadian-wine-tasting-cave-spring-cellars.html.

Random Snippets: Root, Leaf, Flower or Fruit?

February 25, 2010 at 10:53 am (Geek) (, , , , , , , , )

Totally geeky…

If you are into it, following the biodynamic calendar may help your booze taste better.  The calendar was actually created to help guide planting, sowing, and such…but, it applies to wine flavors, too!  [Mr. Steiner developed and shared the principles of biodynamic farming, you can Google him and get the full run down…kinda like extra organic with a side of the mystical…but basically all about ‘living’ soils and a truly sustainable approach to farming].

Apparently, drinking on a ‘root’ or ‘leaf’ day is not ideal to show off the assests of the wine.  Brings out the dirty, earthy funk.  But, to highlight the juice, do drink on a ‘fruit’ or ‘flower’ day, as the deliciousness of the wine is at the forefront and ready to shine.  You can find a fairly concise explanation here and a link to get a calendar…http://stellanatura.com/use.html.   LUSH suggests putting it to the test.  Practice, study, and conduct research.  SIP on each type of day.  Same wine.  Same situation.  Different bottle, duh.  Let us know what you think!  Of course, practical matters take precendence…like food pairing and the company and such.  And, if you want to drink, just do.  Drink what you like when you want.

February 4, 2010 at 10:51 am (Geek, What we are thinking) (, , , , , , , )

So, a few months later and I still have yet to find a Ploussard in Chicago to drink, much less sell.  Alas.  I have hope, though.

Now, however, I am expanding my obsession and thirst to the real quirky wine of Jura…Vin Jaune.  Read the rest of this entry »
