LUSH Interview: 10 Questions with Ms. Lopes

Ten Questions With…
Jane Lopes
Manager, LUSH Roscoe Village

A native of sunny California, Jane grew up virtually surrounded by the vineyards of the Bay Area and exposed to the culture of eating, drinking, and breathing wine earlier in life than many of the Lushies, which may help to explain her deep-seated passion for all things fermented. The moment she walked into the shop for an interview, decked out with electric orange, rubber robot earrings dangling beneath her flaming locks, we knew she was meant for LUSH. In the precious few moments when not running the show as manager and wine buyer at LUSH in Roscoe Village, Jane’s [also tall & redheaded] doppelganger can be found slangin’ classic cocktails at the Violet Hour one night each week. Ms. Jane has an ingrained knack for discerning obscure nuances and flavors, as well as a gift for creating amazingly quirky flavor combinations and innovative, classically inspired cocktail recipes. Like both Rachel and Erin, curiously enough, Jane is also a University of Chicago graduate, rounding out the three stores’ trifecta of innate, total geekiness. Word on the street is that she harbors a literary nerd deep within, and may or may not have been a notoriously clever Shakespeare scholar while in school. True to her alma mater, Jane will happily get down and dirty and all educational with you over whatever wine or spirit about which your little heart desires to learn. Read the rest of this entry »

Things I Heart, Take 4

August 12, 2009 at 9:35 am (BYOB, Our Favorite Things, What we're drinking) (, , , , , , )

Hmm, so many new things how can I ever choose?  Well, the thing that I really heart most today would definitely have to be the 2002 Domaine Huet Vouvray Petillant Brut.  Holy crap that is good!  I had the pleasure of drinking it at one of my favorite BYOBs, Home Bistro in Boystown, last Sunday with great friends.  We opened it at the beginning of the meal and of course I was excited, but after sniffing then tasting, I was even more excited.  Such an amazing sparkling wine.  Beautiful in the glass with a golden color and tiny bubbles.  Aromatic and vibrant on the nose.  Honey and lemon really came out on the palate with a great minerality that I love heart.  It also has a great acidity which is probably why it also went so well at our Fried Chicken and Bubbles event last week.

My suggestion is to grab a bottle of this and drink it.  Sharing is optional.

Sunday May 31st kicked off our Farm Dinner series with Home Bistro (www.homebistrochicago.com), an eclectic neighborhood eatery in Boys Town, and Harvest Moon Farms (www.harvestmoon-farms.com), an organic farm in Wisconsin. The formula is simple: Harvest Moon supplies the produce, game, and delicious dairy products from their own and neighboring farms; Chef Joncarl Lachman at HB whips up a prix-fixe meal for 40+ guests on the last Sunday of every month; and we at LUSH provide complimentary wine pairings for every course. How could this not be a blast!? Read the rest of this entry »

May 21, 2009 at 2:45 pm (Current Events) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

[Our email utility is on the fritz…so I am posting here in case you need the lowdown.  No pretty colors to designate location, so make sure to pay close attention.  Feel free to comment or email me for your very own copy! rachel@lushwineandspirits.com ]

Hoooweee, put it in my glass!

I am not so sure about y’all, but I am very tempted to slip off my sneakers, run around barefoot for a while, and go play outside.  Granted, any playtime deserves a nice, chilly bottle of pink or white wine.  Or a sixer of local pilsner.  Venture out to see us…we have bottles open to sample for (shhh!) free.  And, we are local, friendly, and like to share.

Celebrate the holiday weekend with a little bit of wild adventure and a little bit of daring dining, intelligent sipping, and kickin’ it with friends.  And, with an extra ‘weekend’ day, make sure to break out the grill, de-rust that baby, and shake it all night long at your swinging shindig.  Woot, a party.
