Ten Questions With…
Jane Lopes
Manager, LUSH Roscoe Village

A native of sunny California, Jane grew up virtually surrounded by the vineyards of the Bay Area and exposed to the culture of eating, drinking, and breathing wine earlier in life than many of the Lushies, which may help to explain her deep-seated passion for all things fermented. The moment she walked into the shop for an interview, decked out with electric orange, rubber robot earrings dangling beneath her flaming locks, we knew she was meant for LUSH. In the precious few moments when not running the show as manager and wine buyer at LUSH in Roscoe Village, Jane’s [also tall & redheaded] doppelganger can be found slangin’ classic cocktails at the Violet Hour one night each week. Ms. Jane has an ingrained knack for discerning obscure nuances and flavors, as well as a gift for creating amazingly quirky flavor combinations and innovative, classically inspired cocktail recipes. Like both Rachel and Erin, curiously enough, Jane is also a University of Chicago graduate, rounding out the three stores’ trifecta of innate, total geekiness. Word on the street is that she harbors a literary nerd deep within, and may or may not have been a notoriously clever Shakespeare scholar while in school. True to her alma mater, Jane will happily get down and dirty and all educational with you over whatever wine or spirit about which your little heart desires to learn. Read the rest of this entry »

Things I heart, take 5

October 7, 2009 at 5:28 pm (Our Favorite Things, What we are thinking, What we're drinking) (, , , , , )

2005 Domain Guiberateau Chenin Blanc, Samur, Loire Valley, France
Oh Guiberateau, how I heart thee!  Now that I’ve conquered the correct pronunciation of your name (well, by my American standards anyway), I can completely, whole-heartedly love you.  I’ve loved you, sweet, sweet bottle, since we met a few months ago, and just had the chance to try you again for a tasting we were doing.  Yep, I still heart you, wonderful wine, even more so!  So wierd yet so delicious.  The nose is so great and beautiful and smells like rocks with a touch of honey.  The palate shows a soft fruit, graphite and slate with a lingering minerally finish that has a hint of lime.  It paired great with the talipa I did not cook but did enjoy last night.  Suprisingly, there is still some left for me tonight, so while I’m hard at work, I’ll be dreaming of that half-full bottle of this delightful wine.

Red Zeppelin Winery

Red Zeppelin Winery

P.O. Box 522
Cayucos CA 93430
(805) 550-6492
(805) 926-3152

BIO of Stillman Brown: Ladies, Gentlemen, and fruit flies…

With the essential philosophy to play as hard as you work, these Red Zeppelin kids are rocking like Billy Idol in the 1980s and making kick ass Syrah. I mean that…it kicks your ass. Raging berry and spicy black pepper explode from the glass. One sip and you’ll never go back.

The winemaker with a cult following now is a card carrying member of the ‘BEST SYRAH’ club. Stillman Brown (aka Swilly Idol) is a damn good, no-nonsense winemaker with a charismatic bent for baroque music and punk rock. Stillman’s wines feature the same quintessential harmony and balance between the elegant and the austere as demonstrated in his personal dedication to excellent wine making. There is no stopping this team, and we couldn’t be happier.*Elvis died for your sins; he has left the vineyard.
