PAX and PIG: The Aftermath

PORKY PAXY Pleasures….

It was like a dream*: the heady aromas of slowly roasting pork in the air, a perfect Indian summer evening, white linens topped with flickering candlelight. Oh, yeah–and some damn awesome wine. This past Saturday we hosted a fantastic dinner featuring the ever-rare and ever-delicious wines from Pax Cellars, a cult Syrah** producer based in Northern California. To sweeten the deal, we even had Joe Donelan, their owner, come out to join us and give all the attendees extra insight into the meticulous production and vineyard site selection that makes Pax so special. As the evening progressed, all twenty folks present got to hear anecdotes from the encyclopaedic brain of Mr. Donelan, who knows his wines the way a parent knows a child’s every quirk. From the tasting notes and detailed descriptions of the sites whence come the wines, he had us all engrossed–and it is no easy task to divert one’s attention away from a delicious glass of Syrah!

Free Lush-led seminars at Winefest Chicago!

September 18, 2008 at 12:57 am (Special Events) (, )

Just in case any of you lovable local Lushes weren’t aware, Winefest Chicago is taking place this weekend just up the street from our Roscoe Village location (3840 N Lincoln, to be exact).  We’ll be one of the tables pouring out samples of wine and aweing everyone with our wine savvy.  Not content with talking wine one-on-one, we’ll be hopping onto the podium to teach some classes as well.

At 3:15 pm on Saturday, fantastic Lush Kelly will be teaching a quick guide on the finer art of tasting wine critically, along with many, many demonstrations.

Not to be outdone, I will be teaching a special presentation on the art of wine and food pairing at 4:15pm Sunday afternoon.  If you have some time, come by this weekend and check out what the Lushes are talking about.

Winefest Chicago

Friday, September 19     5 – 10 pm

OYSTERS: The Aftermath

September 17, 2008 at 3:21 pm (Beer, French Wine, Our Favorite Things, Special Events, What we're drinking) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Well, my friends, you may be expecting to peruse a set of crazy pictures of slimy grey creatures…however, my camera remained safely nestled in its case, in my bag, tucked under the cabinet for the duration of LUSH Oyster Fest. Bummer. But, lucky for us, I have very photographic memories to share. And, for all you squeamish folk, no graphic depictions of oysters.

Sharing What I Do

September 16, 2008 at 11:27 pm (Our Favorite Things, Uncategorized) (, )

On the 20th of this month, my good friends — my godparents, really — are getting married in California. Up until recently, the fact that they are both men has prevented them from being able to do so. Needless to say, this is a very special occasion for them, and all their friends and family. As a wedding gift, my parents are sponsoring a dinner for twenty in their home, and I insisted on shipping a case of wine. Read the rest of this entry »

Splattered in crab juice and Tokaji, we were happy. Check out the photos of our lovely evening…waiting, waiting, waiting for the water to boil…and then, bashing crabs and eating ourselves silly!

Starting a Collection: The Arrival of the Fridge

September 9, 2008 at 3:17 am (What we're drinking) (, , , , , , )

Thanks to my mother, and her willingness to drive a truly ridiculous Home Depot rental pick-up, I now have a brand new, shiny, beautiful 50 bottle wine refrigerator. And here is where I get into trouble…The fridge just looked so sad with only a few bottles in it. My next shift at LUSH, I had to grab a few more to fill it out. Read the rest of this entry »

On Nostalgia

September 9, 2008 at 3:14 am (Beer, Our Favorite Things, What we're drinking)

Fall weather and darkening skies always get me a little dreamy and nostalgiac, usually for nothing in particular. It’s one thing I love about this time of year. Well, that and football. But why do I feel this way? It cannot be just the weather, or the mopey music I’m inclined to listen to. As it turns out, it’s loss. Loss of summer, loss of sleep, loss of the meager tan I had for a few weeks. I am sure most Chicagoans can relate.

Susan Stewart wrote a phenomenal study of the many human conditions called On Longing, and in it devotes an entire chapter to the idea of the souvenir. I read this chapter in my very first humanities class during my very first year at the University of Chicago, and one idea from that chapter that has always struck a chord with me was that “nostalgia cannot be sustained without loss.” Read the rest of this entry »
