LUSH Interview: 10 questions with Chuck Sudo
Chuck Sudo
Chicagoist Food and Drink Editor
chuck@chicagoist.com
BIO: Chuck Sudo is a modern day renaissance man[-about-town]. A Chicago native and an early supporter of LUSH, he can also be found checking out brews at the area’s greatest bars, as well as hanging around Bridgeport with his pooch, Emmylou Harris. Fact: One time, former LUSH on Halsted manager Lance’s dog, Jip, once attempted to ‘romance’ Emmylou outside the Bridgeport Coffee Company. She was, uh, less than responsive. Chuck’s got his finger on the pulse of Chicago’s eating and drinking news, and can either be found writing for Chicagoist, his personal blog Bridgeport Seasoning, or roaming the city in spandex. He insists it’s for optimal bike riding but we think he just enjoys the stretchy. Always one step ahead of the next food trend and a fellow supporter of pork products, we’re proud to have him as a LUSH enthusiast, kindred spirit, and fellow South Sider.
Fieldtrip: Fayetteville, Arkansas
by Ms. Rachel Driver
I am from Arkansas. Yes, I am from the deep south…grew up in the Ozark National Forest in a house built by my parents. I ate dirt, played in the creek, sampled fresh veggies from the garden and threw nasty big tomato grubs, got lost in the woods, and picked up snakes. And, yes, I do have an accent…but only if you make me mad or I get very excited.
Dear Spring:
[Three weeks ago] Are you there, Spring? It’s me, Erin. I have some questions for you, if you’ve got just a— no wait! Come back! I hate you.
[Now] Okay, you little tease. I’ve got one wary eye on the sky and another on Tom Skilling, but it seems like you might actually be here for good. Now, I know I’m usually a hater–and can you blame me? Spring, you’re a little too windy and rainy and allergy-y for my taste– but you do have some things going for you. I will list them in alphabetical order: asparagus, bunnies, Dark Lord Day, IPA, gruner veltliner, less curl-up-and-sleep thought patterns, Lush patio-friendly weather, ramps, sailing, saison beer releases, and sunshine.
ReCap: Whiskey Week Night #2 and #3
April 1st, 2009
Whiskey Fest, hosted by the Hyatt Regency, is an annual whiskey throwdown of the best traditional and innovative distillers in the world. A few brewmasters join in on the fun with intense barrel aged brews, and a collection of local distillers are on display, as well.
One gigantic conference hall. 400 distillers. Oodles of whiskey. 4 hours. Go!
ReCap: Whiskey Week, Night 1
Mr. Julian Van Winkle arrived promptly at 5:30pm, a full half hour before expected, minus his signature mustache. In true Lush style, a few die hard Pappy Van Winkle drinkers waltzed in minutes later to grab a few bottles and a signature before the tasting began. Whirlwind of bourbon drinking begins!
